Maureen excelled at sports and enjoyed rough, physical sports. Her passion for sports was matched by an equally natural talent for performing. She won almost every Feis Award for Drama and Theatre Performance the country could offer. At age 14 she was accepted into the Abbey Theater, where her enthusiasm for classical theatre and operatic music was followed. It was this path that would be modified, however, when Charles Laughton, after seeing the screen tests of Maureen was captivated by her stunning eyes. Laughton together with his co-star Erich Pommer changed Maureen FitzSimons title in to "Maureen O'Hara", a slightly shorter name, to appear on the marquee, before casting Maureen as an actor in Jamaica Inn, (1939). With a contract signed to Laughton her next movie was planned to be made in America (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1939)) at RKO Pictures. This epic movie had a huge success, and her contract was transferred outright from Laughton to RKO. In the year 19 Maureen had already appeared in two motion-picture films together with Laughton.
